Montego Bay

The second largest city in Jamaica and the main industrial center on the north coast, Montego Bay is home to over 100,000 people.

The region's growth is driven by the tourism industry.

The town, commonly called MoBay by its inhabitants, has its own hotel zone, lined with restaurants and bars. The main reason for visiting the region is to bask on the many idyllic beaches dotting the coastline, particularly to the east of the town.

In addition to its fine sandy beaches, Montego Bay also attracts visitors with its historical character.

The great sugar cane plantations developed by the English in the 17th century and extending over thousands of hectares on Jamaica's northwest coast, have often preserved their Great Houses, the sumptuous mansions of their masters.

Some of these properties (Rose Hall Great House and Greenwood Great House) can be visited, particularly around Montego Bay.

Just 16 km west of Ocho Rios, the breathtaking beaches of Runaway Bay are much less crowded.

They're also untouched by the crowds disembarking from cruise liners and the sometimes-insistent hawkers.

Perfect for those who don't want to stray too far from their hotel, it does offer a few attractions.

Bob Marley's childhood home and mausoleum are nearby, in Nine Mile. You can discover the history of Jamaica at Seville Great House and the Columbus Park Museum.
